We’re normally a Woman Crush Wednesday kinda team, but every now and then there’s a Man Crush Monday that just takes the cake. Enter Brett McGinn, founder of LFS – that’s Love Fucking Sucks – a smart, sassy service to help heal broken hearts and get back on the pursuit of love…and he has some pretty cool merch too. Brett is honest, fun, playful and adding some much needed levity to the intense world of dating. Here’s his advice when it comes to matters of the heart.
What do you do and why do you do it?
I do relationship consulting through my website lovefuckingsucks.com. While I’m terrible at navigating my own love life (being a hopeless romantic sucks), I’ve always been known for giving superb relationship advice to others. I also think many people just want to talk to a real, relatable person when they’re going through a hard time.
What’s the best gift you ever got?
Being featured as a Man Crush Monday. I’ve been an avid Instagram user for 6 years now and this is the first time someone has crushed on me publicly on a Monday. Thank you so much for that!
What’s the worst gift you ever got?
When I was 14, my “best friend” gave me a Napoleon Dynamite DVD for Christmas. There is nothing in the world that I hate more than Tina the fat lard, Napoleon’s tots and Uncle Rico. That movie is absolutely horrific and thinking about it makes me nauseous.
What’s your advice for all things love, sex and dating?
A wise man once said, “You can’t hurry love, no you just have to wait.” Don’t rush things. I’ve missed opportunities with potential lovers because I’ve tried to make too much happen too fast.
Salt-N-Pepa once said “Let’s Talk About Sex Baby, Let’s Talk About You and Me.” Everybody has sex. Don’t be scared to talk about your sexual likes and dislikes with your significant other. If you don’t ask, you don’t get what you want 😉
Dating – This sounds so cliché, but my dating advice is to just be yourself. So many people put on a front in an attempt to mask their own insecurities. Let the person your dating get to know the real you and learn to love everything about you – even your flaws.
What’s your go to pick me up?
90’s Music. It’s always amazed me how music has the ability to alter our emotions and moods. Nothing makes me happier than dancing around my room alone while listening to Sheryl Crow, Britney Spears, The Spice Girls and Ace of Base
Tell us about your first heartbreak…
In sixth grade, my girlfriend broke up with me at a skating rink. Within the next hour, she was holding hands with another boy. It was the first I had heartache induced by my feelings for a girl. I went home, locked myself in my room and cried while listening to Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O’Connor on repeat.
Tell us about a time you Bounced Back better than ever
Long story short, I fell deeply in love with a very close friend. For whatever reason, I convinced myself that we belonged together. Green Day once said, “You can’t go forcing something if it’s just not right.” Coming to terms with the situation and finally realizing that I wasn’t one grand gesture away from winning her over was so fucking relieving.
